Money saving tips for smoother sailing
Do you want to be pampered, treated like a queen(Or king)For a week?Experience fabulous dining in elegant surroundings?Do what ever you feel like doing whenever you feel like doing it, without having to worry about the time? Then take a weeklong cruise!I don't believe there is any other vacation that is more relaxing and stress reducing than cruising. And if you've never been on a cruise before, here are ten moneysaving tips that all firsttime cruisers need to know.Due to medical treatments and work schedules there was only one week that we were available to take a cruise and then we were told it would take 6 weeks to get our passports!Disappointed, we made alternative plans, keeping the cruise information handy just in case.
Well the passports arrived in 3 weeks and we were off on our cruise the following week! There was not enough time to hunt up the answers to questions of what to pack and what not to pack.Yes, i was a little stressed. So it wasn't surprising when we arrived without items that would have been helpful and would have saved us a little money, too.
Pulling out my iphone(Because i had forgotten to bring a notebook and there were none to be had on the ship)On day one, i began making notes right away, knowing that i would want to write a top ten tips for first time cruisers article when i got home!Just in case you plan to take a cruise in the near future, check out this list of tips and topics, then read on below for a full explanation:
We booked our cruise online and then i called the travel agent that was listed on the site to ask questions. One of the first things i asked was what to do about money.I was told to take traveler's checks, not cash. The agent said all the countries we were going to accepted traveler's checks and that taking cash was not recommended.
I went to my bank to get the traveler's checks and was told they didn't have any and that american express was no longer going to be making them. What? No traveler's checks? My husband went to his bank and was told the same thing. So i called the travel agent to tell her and she said,"Oh no, there are traveler's checks. But only a few and when they were gone, there would be no more available. I tookWhat they had. And guessWhat? We didn't need them at all.In fact, some of the smaller shops in foreign ports couldn't even take them. What could they take?Cash or credit cards.
We decided next time we would use prepaid credit cards for $25 and $50.The kind you get at walmart. That way if they get stolen or lost, there's a limit to the amount of money that we'd be out.
I didn't know what a lanyard was before this cruise.Essentially it is a rope or strip of material used to suspend something around your neck.I was crazy enough to think i was going to have to lug my purse all over the ship or wear slacks with lots of pockets.I confess i even wasted space in my suitcase by bringing several different purses with me.I'm not really that fashion conscious, i just had no idea what kind of purse i would need to carry necessary items like money, credit cards, travelers checks, room key, etc.
As we were standing in line at the terminal, waiting to be checked in, i noticed that people were carrying their passports, driver's licenses, and credit card in a necklace like thing around their necks. They weren't having to dig through their purse or wallet trying to get these items out to show at each checkpoint like i was.I knew i would need to get one of these. You can find these lanyards at the terminal and if you miss them there, go to one of the shops on board. They are sure to have some.Or buy one from amazon before you go so you are ready to whip out those documents without having to search for them. There are different models to choose from.I was very happy with the one i found at a shop on the ship because it not only carried my room card key, driver's license, and credit card, there was also a zippered pocket for cash or other small valuables. My purse never left the safety deposit box in our cabin throughout the whole cruise.
There are very long lines, both when embarking and disembarking.Cruising is not for wimps! You can check your bigger suitcases, just like when flying. And you can carry on anything you are able to carry. It is wise to remember that whatever you carry on, you'll have to carry off, with the addition of whatever souvenirs you buy. There is quite a distance to walk, both before boarding and again once you get on the ship.We saw what must have been experienced cruisers with their portable luggage racks piled high with cases of water and luggage, secured with bungee cords.Sure wish we had known this beforehand. It would have been well worth the cost and saved the exhaustion of hauling our luggage around for hours.
Another benefit of having foldup luggage racks and suitcases on wheels is that when it comes time to disembark on that last day, those who can carry off all of their own luggage get the privilege of disembarking first. That would have saved hours of waiting. But to be honest, i don't think it's possible for me to pack a week's worth of clothes and souvenirs and be able to lug it all off the ship and down very long corridors while going through customs.
I travel and stay in motels every week with my job, so my suitcase is always packed. Each week i just replenish what i've used.Over the years of traveling, i've learned to carry a few handy items. One of them is an extension cord.It was a good thing that i had one, too, as my husband has to use a sleep apnea machine and there was no plugin close to the bed.I would imagine the cabin steward could have found one for us, but i was thankful that i already had one.
The second item i always carry is a nightlight. It gets really dark in that cabin with only one window.I can't imagine how dark it would be in the cabins without portholes.Plugging in that little nightlight in the bathroom made it easy for those late night bathroom runsno having to turn on bright lights and disturb my hubby(Or he disturb me! ).
I didn't realize until this cruise how dependant i've become on my cell phone.Everything is at my fingertips texting, email, internet, and phone. In seconds i can connect with friends and family.I can find my husband or friends in the store when they've wandered off to do their own shopping.I found myself at quite a loss on this huge ship with no way to find my husband if we got separated. With no means of communication, it made it very hard to split up or try to meet up with each other.
On a ship with 3, 500 passengers and 1, 500 staff members, i think i saw only one person using a cell phone the entire week.Seems odd, doesn't it?And why isn't anyone using cell phone?Because the cost is so exhorbitant. You know if there are that many people willing to give up their cell phone use it must be really, really expensive.
It was hard enough just keeping up with my husband, and i don't know how families with lots of kids or large groups traveling together found each other. You could waste a lot of time trying to find your children, spouse or friends on a huge cruise ship.So how did people manage? We saw some people using walkie talkies.Mainly, we saw kids using the walkie talkies to find each other. If i had only thought of it, i would have dug up the ones we used to use before cell phones became so popular!
As we were disembarking on that last day, we noticed another means of communication we had completely overlooked.A lady was talking on a wall phone located beside the elevators.I have to admit, i never even noticed those phones during the week.We asked about them and were told that they were inhouse phones put there so people could call their rooms.I thought that phone in our room was only for room service!
Photo of ryan, a belize citizen, and his horse, pirate, on an excursion we took in belize city.We did not book this excursion from the ship but saw trips through belize by horse and cart advertised on the dock and decided to take the tour.It proved to be one of the best excursions of the cruise.
Every time the ship pulls into a port, you have a choice of what to do.You can stay on the ship, you can disembark and plan your own activities, or you can purchase an excursion through the ship. The cruise line will tell you that the only excursion they will sanction is their own., If you are on a ship sponsored excursion and something goes wrong and you don't arrive back at the ship on time for departure, they will wait for you or send out the posse to see what has happened. But if you go out on your own, you are really on your own.You are told at the beginning of the cruise that the ship will leave without you if you don't get back on time.I'm not sure if the cruise line is trying to keep you safe or trying to keep your money coming their way.
Staying on the ship isn't such a bad idea, either, as there are often discounts on massages, manicures, etc. While the ship is in port. When i travel, i want to see the world, not hang out on the ship. There is always plenty to do in port, even if all you do is go shopping or to the nearest beach. This is a great website that we were told of by a fellow shipmate that we met who had been on many cruises. She told us that she rarely booked ship excursions anymore because she always checked the critiques and asked questions on this website. And she and her husband and friends had made it back to the ship safely each time. You can find information on cruise critic about cruises, cruiselines, excursions, what to do in different ports, and much more.Be sure and check it out before booking your cruise and excursions. Most excursions are quite pricey and some proved not to be worth the money.
We already knew before arriving at the port for our cruise that we would have to provide our own water or pay high prices for bottled water on the ship.Attendants met us at our car and loaded our luggage right from the car. That's when we found out that if we wanted to take the case of bottled water we were bringing that we would have to carry it ourselves, along with our carry on bags! Not possible.A very nice baggage handler quietly told us(Unofficially)That our luggage wouldn't be searched and if we wanted, we could stuff those water bottles in our suitcases.Whew.We were glad to hear it.
Once we arrived on the ship, we found that the bottled water was very expensive, but the drinking water, straight from the tap, was pretty good.I never drink tap water but i think i probably could have done okay with the water on board.During an orientation meeting, the captain announced that all water from the ship was ocean water that was recycled on the ship.I don't know if that is true on every cruise line but this is how carnival supplies water, in an effort to be green and not pollute the world with all those plastic bottles.
We were told by the online travel agent that we could probably board the ship around 1:00 and to be sure and be there by 2:00 for a planned 4:30 departure. We hurried to eat lunch before heading for the port in new orleans.Big mistake.Don't eat lunch! There is a wonderful buffet awaiting you on the ship!
And don't wait until 1:00 to show up.By 1:00, several thousand people were already in line and boarding. They knew what we didn't:Come early and board early.Even if the cabins are not ready, you can board and hang out on deck, at the bar, or the lunch buffet. Some were already swimming.Just bring what you need in your carryon luggage and you won't care when you're cabin is ready.
My photos taken at the buffet on board the carnival triumph came out too dark to share. This photo is a typical buffet meal aboard ship, compliments of roger4336 via flickr and a creative commons license.
There are no disposables on board.None.No styrofoam cups with lids, no paper napkins, no paper plates. It is a very long walk from the lido deck(Typically at the top of the ship where all the buffets are)To get coffee in the morning, back to your cabin on the first floor.By the time you arrive, your coffee is cold or you drank it all on the way.Not to mention slopping it all over if the ship is rolling in rough weather. It was easy to spot the veteran cruisers they all had insulated cups with lids!
Recycling household rubbish
Recycling
Pandora Charms UK household rubbish?
One council has now introduced 9 different bins, bags and boxes for the residents to recycle their rubbish. This is despite protests that many don have the room for all of them.
I all in favour of recycling, but not at the end of a gun of a 1000 fine if you accidentally put the wrong item in the wrong box or you cannot close your bin lid because it is an inch too full.
This has now taken on pantomime proportions of town hall bullying and another way to screw the tax payer. They do not seem to have the imagination to think outside the box(Or wheelie bin).Every council has a different scheme for recycling and they are often so complex that it is nearly impossible get right.Nevertheless, if you make a minor mistake they either do not take away your rubbish or they impose fines ignoring the fact that you did your best.
Why can we not put all our dry waste in one bin that gets sorted at a recycling centre?I would pay a little extra for the service and it would create work.Alternatively, there could be neighbourhood bins for less common recycling so that we don all have to have 9 bins.I am sure that you can come up with other ideas.
My local tip is just being turned into a"Recycling centre"Where you are not allowed to take any general waste(That can not be recycled). They may as well close it down because there is always something left over that you can not recycle. We will now have to drive another 5 miles to another tip. This is the reward we get for being the best recyclers in the county recycling 75% of the rubbish at that centre.
It is time to tell these public servants that they work for us and they should solve our problems and not vice versa. What are they doing to earn their early retirement and gold plated pensions?
I had to respond to this one, i have been having an email battle with the recycle contracts manager, some what sarcastic, and myself putting myself across as a"Mr thick character"Approaching these twats with the contempt they deserve, as such yes childish and futile, however, the point being they have to respond to the complainant politely and it is after all there job,
It started off through the recycle bin not being emptied, with a note / red form attached, due to a jar not being rinsed! Now this particular box is for paper, glass and tins! For the last year we have done this, not all tins jars admit idly have not been cleaned but no complaints until this one day,
Also as the box is more suitable for glass and tins, we utilised an old wire plastic coated tray just for the newspapers(Recycling in action so to speak! )We would place a piece of wood to stop papers blowing away,(Apparently not acceptable as it does not have a lid? )
I put all these points across to them, and one of the replys was, the leaflet states jars should be cleaned"Lids can be left on"I asked them do you only wish the outside of jars cleaned! If the lids are to be kept on?The ridiculous and pathetic questions that i raised was comical to say the least,
Do we remove labels off tins and jars? What washing up liquid is suitable for the asaid washing,(Bio / non bio)A valid point for all i know the operative may have an allergy, cont ravining health and safety, do lids of tins need to be refitted as well, my point was to show up how petty and pointless
There version of recycling is,
I like the idea of recyclinjg in theory, and i do do what i can, but sometimes it seems like it isn well thought out.
As you say, not all homes are large enough to cope with multiple containers for all the recycling categories. We only have one, but that is bad enough in a small flat. Our area is soon to have alternate collection weeks, i am dreading that.I would have no problems with it save for the fact i live in a block of flats we are supposed to be getting a communal recycling bin and a normal rubbish bin.Good in theory, but i know for a fact that it will not be adhered to.Normal rubbish will go into the recycling(Especially when the normal is full! ), I just know that for a fact.Goodness help us if the council start fining us i will totally grudge it.
